Lombok Travel Safety Guide: Local Tips for a Worry-Free Vacation

When talking about safety in Lombok, from the perspective of us locals, the general atmosphere is actually quite chill and relaxed. Lombok is a friendly place, and the sense of community is still strong. However, like any tourist spot, where there's opportunity, there might be a few minor issues.

For foreign visitors, they might think it's risky, but for us, it's more about "being reasonably cautious."

Stories About Petty Theft ("Long Hands")

The biggest risk tourists might face here is just pickpocketing or motorbike theft. It's not like armed robberies you see in movies; it’s not that extreme. It's more about opportunistic crime.

Tips from us: Don't leave your stuff unattended on the beach while swimming. Keep your phone and wallet in a guarded bag or store them safely at your hotel. Using the safe is a must. If you're walking alone at night in a quiet area, it's common sense that we'd say it's better not to. Just use your logic, the same as you would in any major city in the world.

Watch Out for "Devil's Water" (Bootleg Alcohol)

Now, this is the most serious thing. Not about crime, but about health. We've often heard stories of foreigners and even locals dying because they drank bootleg alcohol mixed with methanol. Sometimes in Gili, sometimes in Senggigi.

Tips from us: If you want a drink, it's better to buy sealed branded beer or imported spirits. Don't experiment with local concoctions that aren't clear about their origin, or those sold cheaply at small stalls. The price might be cheap, but you're risking your life, man.

About Roads and Transport

The roads in Lombok are decent, but in rural areas, many are still basic. We often see foreigners renting motorbikes, speeding without helmets, or riding at night when the road is pitch black.

Tips from us: If you're renting a bike, wearing a helmet is mandatory. Not just because of the police, but for your own safety. When driving, don't be reckless. It's better to use a reputable taxi company, like Bluebird, or order through trusted online transport apps like Grab/Gojek. It's safer, and the fares are clear.

Earthquakes and Nature

We live in the "Ring of Fire" region, so earthquakes are common here; they happen often but are rarely major. During the rainy season (November-March), be prepared for drizzle or occasional small floods in some spots.

Tips from us: Having comprehensive travel insurance is important. Don't panic if there's a small tremor. And always stock up on bottled water. The water here isn't necessarily safe to drink straight from the tap.

The point is, Lombok is safe, and the people are friendly. As long as you use common sense, look after your belongings, and avoid reckless things (especially the alcohol issue), your vacation here will surely be smooth sailing and fun. Welcome to Lombok!
